The well known media ward has become victim of Global financial meltdown. The Transparency International’s India Chapter has cancelled its annual awards to journalists due to ‘the recent economic downturn’ of its sponsor.
Famous hotelier Oberoi Group was sponsoring the Transparency International’s ‘Rai Bahadur M.S.Oberoi Media Awards’ for excellence in exposing corruption for the past three years. The award carries Rs. 2 Lakh each in print and TV category for Gold Awards. It also disbursed Rs.1 Lakh each in print and TV for Silver Awards.
The entries for this year’s awards were invited and the final date for submission of entries was fixed on January 15. But it was cancelled few days ago, due to the ‘inability of the sponsor’ to support the award. “Transparency International India regrets to announce that the Rai Bahadur M S Oberoi Media awards will not be conducted. Our current sponsors have expressed their inability to support the Media award this year due to the recent economic downturn,” said Transparency International through a message posted at its website.
“We do hope to renew our initiative to award stories that report corruption next year. Inconvenience caused to those who have visited our website and processed their applications and to all interested nominees is deeply regretted,” it added.
