Dutch game show for asylum-seekers offers plenty of food for thought

Think the irony of The Colbert Report in game show format where winners don’t have to go back to their home countries broke, and there you have Weg van Nederland, the liberal contribution to the country’s immigration debate. Neither winners nor losers receive the asylum they’ve been seeking in the Netherlands, but losers do get a bulletproof vest. The question being posed is whether or not everyone is a loser thanks to the country’s tightening rules regarding those seeking asylum.
According to Frank Wiering, head of VPRO that airs the program:
"My first reaction was: terrible idea, we're not doing that. Then I looked into the issue more deeply and decided we have to do this.
"Weg van Nederland focuses attention on the fact that, these days, many asylum seekers who are being expelled have children who have lived in the Netherlands for eight years or more. They have had a good education, speak perfect Dutch and have only seen their country of birth on television. We believe it's time to stop and think about this."
The contestants are, he added, "highly intelligent, self-assured people quite capable of deciding for themselves whether to take part or not".
The real question is whether those opposed to immigration are more concerned with losing talent or losing competition? That could make all the difference.
