Merkel described Kim as a "highly respected statesman and democrat," in a letter to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak.

"His political engagement for democracy and human rights in Korea as well as peace and stability in the region will not be forgotten," the chancellor wrote.

The former president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate died at the age of 83, after battling pneumonia. He had been hospitalized since July 13 and underwent surgery in late July.

Merkel went on to say that Germany had lost a "good friend."

"Kim Dae Jung took his country's relationship with Germany to heart," Merkel said, adding that he had developed relations between the two countries during his time in office.
