Groovy sticker art of the ‘60s and ‘70s Posted about 24 hours ago by Po-wed_006__2__thumb Kate Rinsema to Holy Kaw! Like this post 2 Media_httpfarm1static_rdyql Gone are most of the junkers that still sported the classic bumper art of a bygone era, but luckily, JasonLiebig has rounded up an incredible collection of stickers from the 1960s and 1970s that’ll make you feel like you’re right back in the rear of the pickup truck or station wagon flaunting your non-seatbelt-wearin’ self. Champion surfers duck disaster in monster waves Posted about 18 hours ago by Po-wed_006__2__thumb Kate Rinsema to Holy Kaw! Like this post 1 Media_httpfarm6static_pjpvf Shooting for a film with a title like Storm Surfers 3D is bound to involve navigating some dangerous conditions, but surfers Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones made an almost miraculous escape last week. Carroll was towing Clarke-Jones into a six meter wave on a jet ski off the coast of Western Australia when the wave overtook him and ripped the jetski apart. According to Carroll: "The waves were so wild and unpredictable that it was hard to tell what was happening…I towed Ross into a wave then tried to get the ski over the back of the wave, however a large bit of chop bounced me back onto the face. From there I did all I could but just couldn't get the ski off the wave before it broke." Miraculously, Carroll only suffered a bruise on the shin and his companion escaped unscathed, but the is one the surfers won’t soon forget. They did get their footage for the film, though one wonders if movie-goers will ever know what it could have cost to get. Full story at Perth Now. Extreme surfing. Like this post Media_httpcachegawker_cfrgr We know there’s no one out there who would ever be tempted to break the law when it comes to fireworks, but with all the people hitting the open road for the Fourth of July, you may not be aware of what the attitude toward fireworks is at your vacation destination. Pity if you miss out on the fun of playing the “Firework or gunshot?” game, but not everyone can be so lucky. Full story at Gizmodo. Nothing says “freedom” like firecrackers. Like this post Media_httpfarm6static_tffxp The seemingly fearless Ernest Hemingway spent the last year of his life haunted by suspicions he was under scrutiny by the ever-seeing eye of the FBI, a fear many dismissed as a symptom of mental illness rather than a very real possibility. Those who knew the legendary writer well were no exception, including A.E. Hotchner, author of “Papa Hemingway” and “Hemingway and His World” who recounts the heartbreaking nature of his last memories of the author and his shock at the revelation that, rather than being a manifestation of mental illness, Hemingway seemed to somehow know the FBI was indeed watching his every move. Like this post Media_httpdldropboxco_ccyvd In 1957, young Maria Ridulph went missing in her home town; months passed and her remains were found. The town was generally described as a family-oriented, safe place, so the killing came as a shock to everyone, even drawing the attention of Washington D.C. Police suspected a man named Jack Daniel McCullough, but his alibi cleared...until a recent twist in the investigation blew a whole in McCullough's alibi. He claimed to have taken a train out of town, but an ex-girlfriend provided police with the unused train ticked. Once the ticket cropped up, police piled up evidence against McCullough, leading to an arrest. Full story at Yahoo! News. Top crime news. Like this post Media_httpdldropboxco_egfgc They always say it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Besides being less work than frowning, though, what are the scientific benefits of smiling? PsyBlog explains some of the other plus sides of smiling, and offers scientific studies that back them up. For example, Recover from social slip-ups Did you forget to buy your partner an anniversary present? Has an important client's name slipped your mind? Have you accidentally kicked a small child? If you've tripped on a social banana, embarrassment is your go-to emotion. The function of embarrassment is to get us out of tight social spots (Keltner & Buswell, 1997). The embarrassed smiles we display involve looking down and sometimes we emit a silly little laugh. This is designed to elicit fellow-feeling from other people so they think less of the slip and forgive us more quickly. So the embarrassed smile helps us get out of jail free(ish). I made this "Hawaii wedding slideshow" in iPhoto after our honeymoon 5 years ago Posted about 5 hours ago by Garr_thumb Garr Reynolds to Garr's posterous Like this post Embedded media -- click here to see it. Today is our 5-year wedding anniversary. We got married on the Oregon Coast on the 4th of July. (We had just had a wedding ceremony in Japan two days earlier. ) Yes, in Oregon they had a huge fireworks show on the beach that night—not sure what the occasion was. Then we went straight to Hawaii for a photo shoot and honeymoon, mostly on the Big Island, but the photos were shot on Oahu. This slideshow is not very slick or professional -- but it took only minutes to throw together. Even five years ago iPhoto was easier to use than falling of a log. I heard that my mother loved seeing it, and that's all that matters. Anyway, hard to believe it has been five years.....
